Design Leadership and Philosophy

Design leadership is about creating clarity across three areas: people, creative direction, and operations. Without all three aligned, even strong teams pull in different directions.

I build high-performing teams through mentoring and culture, drive scalable design solutions and systems, and establish ways of working that connect design decisions directly to business outcomes.

I lead with humility and self-confidence, and I am at my best when collaborating with others to solve complex problems and deliver high-quality outcomes.

How I lead

1. People

I hire for diversity because mixed teams consistently outperform homogeneous ones. I use structured onboarding, regular 1:1s, and competency frameworks to make progression transparent and fair. I identify future leaders using a Performance vs Potential matrix and build growth plans around stretch assignments, mentoring, and specialist training. Performance management and development are the same conversation, not separate ones.

Learning and development is the part of leadership I take most seriously. People grow differently, so I adapt how I develop individuals rather than applying a single approach to everyone. The seven promotions I have helped secure across HSBC and MVF are the thing I am most proud of in my career, not a project or a metric, but the people I worked with who went on to do things I did not expect when I first met them.

2. Creative

I lead design end-to-end, from problem framing and research through to execution and quality assurance. I run critique sessions, Design Sprints, and workshops to sharpen thinking and raise standards across the team. I advocate for Design Systems, Playbooks, and shared templates because consistency at scale requires infrastructure, not just individual talent.

I build environments where feedback is direct, ideas are genuinely considered, and designers are expected to challenge assumptions, including mine. The result is a team that does not need permission to do their best work.

3. Operations

I work effectively at senior levels, presenting to board members and business leads, and translating design strategy into commercial language. I manage budgets, headcount, and have developed business cases for contractor and permanent hires. I have introduced Agile ways of working across multiple teams and standardised tooling to reduce handoff friction and maintain delivery pace.

Adapting to the individual

I adjust my approach based on the person and the situation. With less experienced team members I provide clear direction while building confidence. With senior designers I delegate and step back, giving genuine ownership. The measure of good leadership is making yourself less necessary over time, not more.
